Resonant acoustic scattering from solid targets

چکیده

An asymptotic method of solution is presented for scattering of acoustic waves from solid elastic targets. The asymptotic parameter is the ratio of the fluid density to that of the solid, and the solution is developed using the method of matched asymptotic expansions inthis small quantity. The perturbations to the background rigid scattered field are regular for frequencies away from the frequencies offree vibration of the target in.vacuo, but, near these frequencies, the perturbation is singular in that an asymptotically small value of the density ratio produces a change in the scattered field of order unity. By combining the regularly and singularly perturbed expansions, a solution is obtained that is uniformly correct at all frequencies. The elements in the uniform solution depend only upon the in vacuo modes and frequencies, and the Green's function for the equivalent rigid target. At no stage is it necessary to solve the fully coupled system. An analysis of the asymptotic approximation for a spherical target shows that it is equivalent in the high-frequency limit to the approximation predicted by resonance scattering theory.

Scattering by Penetrable Acoustic Targets

An acoustic target of constant density pt and variable index of refraction is imbedded in a surrounding acoustic fluid of constant density pa. A time harmonic wave propagating in the surrounding fluid is incident on the target. We consider two limiting cases of the target where the parameter e = pa/p, + 0 (the nearly rigid target) or E + ~0 (the nearly soft target). When the frequency of the in...

Theory of acoustic scattering by supported ridges at a solid-liquid interface.

We combine a general Green's function formalism and an approach due to Nyborg [W. L. Nyborg, in Acoustic Streaming, Physical Acoustics, edited by W. P. Mason (Academic, London, 1965), Vol. II B, Chap. 11] to calculate the first-order pressure and second-order pressure gradient fields in the vicinity of solid inhomogeneities at a solid/liquid interface. We treat the problem of scattering of an i...

A Comparison between Resonant Raman Scattering in Type II GaAs/AlAs Superlattices and Single GaAs Quantum Wells

We present a comparison between resonant Raman scattering experiments on a type II GaAs/ AlAs superlattice of short period and a single GaAs quantum well. Under resonant excitation, a continuous emission is observed in the low-frequency range of the two heterostructure Raman spectra. This scattering is analyzed in terms of breakdown of the wavevector conservation law due to single quantum-well ...

Acoustic metamaterial properties of a 2D closed cellular solid with entrained fluid

Metamaterials are often defined as artificial compositions designed to exhibit desired physical properties. These materials attract a lot of research attention due to unusual behavior that may not yet have been seen in nature. Although there is no commonly accepted definition for metamaterials, they are typically associated with peculiar macroscale properties resulting from their substructure. ...

Recent Developments in Sonic Crystals

The properties of sonic bandgap crystals will be reviewed and recent results obtained by our group will be reported. Particularly, the homogenization method based on multiple scattering theory will be presented and applied to the case of two-dimensional (2D) structures consisting of fluid-fluid and solid-fluid composites [1, 2]. The method is general and it is employed to get the effective para...
